From Earth to Colour
A Workshop in Making Natural Paint from Soil & Plants
Come and spend a creative, hands-on morning discovering how the colours of the landscape can be transformed into beautiful, natural paints.
In this workshop, we will explore the simple practice of making colour from the earth beneath our feet and the plants growing around us. Working with gathered soils, clays and botanical materials, we will discover how to turn them into paints that can be used for drawing, mark-making and painting.
We’ll begin by looking closely at the surprising variety of colours found in different soils and stones - from warm ochres and rusty reds to soft greys, creams and deep earthy browns. We will have the opportunity to grind, sieve and prepare these materials, experimenting with simple binders to create our own earth paints.
Alongside this, we’ll explore colour from plants, discovering how leaves, flowers, berries and other botanical materials can produce delicate and sometimes unexpected pigments and stains.
There will be plenty of time to experiment with your handmade colours on paper, exploring texture, layering, gesture and intuitive mark-making. The emphasis is on curiosity and discovery rather than producing a finished artwork.
This workshop offers an opportunity to slow down, work with your hands and experience colour as something living and connected to place.
No previous art experience is needed. Just bring your curiosity, clothes you don’t mind getting a little earthy, and a willingness to experiment.
Come and discover the palette beneath your feet.
A friendly class, open to all, where you can meet other people over a shared fun activity. At Make & Meditate, we believe that everyone is creative, and invite you to simply play with the materials and see what emerges! This group emerged from a shared love of arts and crafts, combined with a desire to build sangha (spiritual community) by being alongside each other in new ways.
We usually start with some form of gentle movement to allow us to connect with our bodies and our experience, and end with a led meditation where we may reflect on what we have created.
In the past we have done sessions with clay, making candles, visible mending, and new years vision boards.
No previous experience of arts & crafts or meditation required, and no need to book - just drop in on the day.
Please note under-18s must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
There is no set charge for our Make & Meditate events - we invite you to make a donation when you come, by card or cash.
The Bristol Buddhist Centre runs most of its events on a donation basis. This helps maintain a spirit of generosity and gratitude, and ensure the Dharma remains accessible to all.
