Within the Triratna Buddhist community, we try to offer individuals who are inspired by the Buddhist teachings and practices ways of making that inspiration into more of a lived experience.
For those who wish to go even further with their exploration of Buddhism, we offer the option to become a Mitra. 'Mitra' (which comes from Sanskrit, the language of the early Buddhist texts) literally means 'friend'.
If, for the moment at least, you feel that Buddhist practice within the context of our community here in Bristol is something you wish to deepen, you might consider becoming a Mitra. You may already be starting to put that wish into action in your daily life.
As well as representing this conscious commitment, becoming a Mitra provides the opportunity to join Mitra study courses and Mitra retreats. More broadly, it can open the door to engaging more deeply with the life of the Bristol Buddhist Centre and forming more meaningful friendships within the spiritual community.
Becoming a Mitra involves two things:
First, an informal chat with one of our Mitra Convenors, to get to know you and your relationship with Buddhism and Triratna. This is less about being 'vetted' and more about determining whether becoming a Mitra is right for you at this moment.
Then, you will be invited to formally express your commitment, along with others who have also decided to take this step, in a public Mitra Ceremony at the Buddhist Centre. The ceremony is simple and involves each Mitra-to-be making three traditional offerings of a flower, a candle and incense, witnessed by the local sangha (community), as well as any friends or family you may wish to invite.
If you'd like to become a Mitra, or to simply ask more about it, speak to one of our Mitra Convenors:
