"Nothing has ever helped me in my life as much as the Bristol Buddhist Centre."

'Dana' means 'giving', or 'generosity'. Cultivating generosity is a key aspect of Buddhist practice. The Buddha said to his followers that if they only knew the joy of giving to others as he experienced it, they would never pass up an opportunity to give - even if it was the final morsel of their last ever meal!
Bar a few exceptions, we don't charge set amounts for any of the events or classes we run at the centre. We depend entirely on the generosity of our visitors, community members, and distant friends to keep things going. We believe this is a radical approach, as it provides an alternative to the way that the world at large works, with an emphasis on generosity and gratitude rather than monetary value. It also helps ensure the Dharma remains accessible to all, regardless of means.
Money isn't inherently bad, though it can sometimes feel 'icky' - an unfortunate necessity with connotations of greed and inequality. When money is used transactionally, the question of value remains the focus, with a mindset of getting as much as we can for as little as possible.
When given as a gift from a place of love, good intention or gratitude, we believe money becomes something sacred. The Bristol Buddhist Centre survives on this very ideal: everything we do is made possible by the kindness and gratitude of people like you. It's a profoundly beautiful fact to our existence as an institution and community.
"It’s not really possible to put a value on what Bristol Buddhist Centre provides; the friendships, the warm welcoming atmosphere, the teachers, and most importantly, the opportunities to discover the Buddhist teachings. I don’t think there is anywhere else like it in Bristol."
